For years Andy Murray has been working ferociously hard to convert his undeniable talent into a major title. From strength training and gym work to track work with sprinters. Andy was training so hard on his groundstrokes that his coaches jokingly suggested that his arms might fall off. Yet all that won Andy was a bunch of masters titles and 4 grandslam semi finals. Lendl a tennis great found kinship with Andy, having been through the same disappointment himself losing grandslam after grandslam at the final hurdle until finally he was able to break through to win his first grandslam final… and then win another 7 more after.
Lendl seemed to have an immediate impact on Andy from the first moment they teamed up. The first strong signal that Lendl was changing Andy’s mind game at the 2012 Australian open where Andy Murray faught ferociously with Novak before going down in the 5th set. Andy didn’t win, but his performance was gutsy and free from the crippling nervousness that would make Andy tighten up at the times he needed to relax. Andy’s progression was further confirmed with making the final of wimbledon going down to an on fire Federer, yet still showing a composure and self belief that he had aways lacked.
The loss to Federer was made a lot less painful shortly after when Andy seeming made his claim to tennis history winning an olympic gold at the 2012 London Olympics this time beating Federer in the finals. This Olympic gold medal set the stage for Andy’s ascent to the top of the mountain that is a grand slam title, and this time arounnd Andy was ready to make it all the way to the top with an amazingly gritty hard faught final against Novak. The tennis world will now watch on eagerly to see if Andy can turn this single grandslam and strong momentum into a career for the history books in which he might be able to join Novak, Roger and Rafa to be long remembered as a tennis great.
